“Pretty is as pretty does.” This was something my grandmother used to tell the girls in the family as a reminder that we are only as beautiful as we are on the inside. Things like fashion, hairdos, and make up can’t hide the ugliness of poor character.

Today, grandma’s saying (which I learned later was more or less from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales) drives how I farm, as I work to make my actions line up with my morals.
